Jim and Susan Byer Use a Bequest to Help Future Students Find Success

Look around campus and you can’t miss something Jim Byer ’62 helped create. During his tenure as head of school, the campus gained an expanded library; a renovated athletics center, including the Grant M. Shipley ’42 Pavilion; and the Alan Landis ’61 Fine Arts Building. He also strengthened the faculty, campus technology, and school culture — quite a record for an alum whose parents had to force him to enroll as a student years ago.
As big an impact as Jim had while on campus, the impact he and his wife Susan will have on the future will be just as great. Through a bequest in their will, Jim and Susan have ensured their legacy will continue for years to come.
“Living and learning at Hun was an integral part of our lives,” Jim says. Growing up attending public school in Trenton alongside kids who didn’t have the same opportunities, Jim said he and Susan want to help future students in financial need.
After college, Jim returned to The Hun School as a teacher, a coach, and, later, a dean before moving to Florida where he led other schools to success. In 1994, he returned to his alma mater as head of school, creating a legacy that lasts today.
Susan, who was also a Hun faculty member, joins Jim in their desire to help the institution that made such an impact on their lives. They urge others to consider making a planned gift. “How do you want to be remembered?” Jim asks. “If you want to create a legacy that is meaningful, then you should consider leaving a gift to Hun in your will.”
